By A Staff Reporter, Kathmandu, Nov. 23: The Election Commission of Nepal has announced a revised voting weightage for voters participating in the National Assembly election.
Issuing a statement, Joint Secretary and spokesperson of the Commission Shaligram Sharma Paudel informed that the commission has set new voting weightages of provincial assembly members and chiefs and deputy chiefs of the local levels, as per the National Census 2021.
Paudel said the EC’s meeting held on Wednesday has decided to set a voting weightage of 53 for provincial assembly members and 19 for chiefs and deputy chiefs of rural municipalities and mayor and deputy mayors of municipalities for electing members of the National Assembly.
Previously, one provincial assembly member held a voting weightage of 48, while chiefs and deputy chiefs of local levels held a voting weightage of 18 votes.
The EC has recommended to the government to hold the elections of National Assembly by January 29, 2024 for the posts that are going vacant from March 4, 2024.
One-third of the members of the National Assembly, including Chairman Ganesh Prasad Timilsina, are retiring on March 4, 2024.
As per the Section 5 of the National Assembly Election Act, elections should be held 35 days prior to the position of a member of the National Assembly falls vacant.
