By Radha Luitel,Phidim, Aug. 6:The black cardamom is sold at 60 thousand rupees per 40 kg in Phidim. The black cardamom trader Khem Nath Adhikari informed that the price of black cardamom was 62 thousand per 40 kg in Birtamod, Jhapa.

However, the cardamom farmers didn’t get benefit from the increased price as the season of cardamom has ended for this year and the stored black cardamom of farmers was already sold.
In Asar, black cardamom was bought and sold at Rs. 1000 per kg and there was steady improvement in the price after Asar, said the traders.
A week ago, the price of cardamom was Rs. 50 thousand per 40 kg.

According to Ram Kumar Rai, a cardamom farmer of Pachthar Miklajung, the season of black cardamom generally starts from Bhadra and lasts till the first week of Mangsir.
The refined black cardamom is sold from Bhadra to Magh, so instead of farmers traders benefitted from this increment in price.
Black cardamom is divided into A, B and C class. According to black cardamom traders, excellent A class cardamom was sold at Rs. 65,000, medium B class was sold at Rs. 63,000 and C class cardamom was sold at Rs. 59,000 per 40 kg in Phidim on Monday.

India is the market of black cardamom produced in Nepal. The black cardamom produced in eastern Nepal reaches India via Birtamod of Jhapa. After that, India exports black cardamom to other countries.
Black cardamom is the steady source of income for the farmers of eastern Nepal. Black cardamom grows in the sloppy areas of the hilly regions, so it is even called the gold of the slopes.
The price of black cardamom is determined by the international market and the farmers are not getting benefit from price rise.
Black cardamom is the main source of income for the farmers of Taplejung, Pachthar, Ilam and Sankhuwasabha.
