Number of ethnic groups increases in national census

Kathmandu, June 3: The National Population Census 2078 (2022) has shown an increase in the total number of ethnic groups in Nepal. It has been recorded to be 142.     

According to the National Statistics Office, the latest information has been published based on the recommendations of the expert group made on the basis of the answers given by the respondents in relation to ethnicity, language and religion in the National Census, 2078.     

In the previous census in 2068 (2011), there were 125 ethnic groups, which has now increased by 17.     

Also, the number of mother tongues is now 124 and the number of religions followed in the country is 10. (RSS)
