Nepali Army does not need to procure arms: CoAS Sharma

Panchkhal (Kavrepalanchok), May 26 : Chief of the Army Staff (CoAS) Prabhu Ram Sharma asserted that there was no need for the Nepali Army (NA) to purchase weapons for peace-keeping missions.     

Talking to media persons at a programme organized on the occasion of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers here today, CoAS Sharma clarified that since the Army organization presently had adequate arms and ammunition needed for it, there was no any need to buy them at the moment.     

Sharma further said that it was natural to study the nearest market or the market place of the concerned country to purchase various parts of the vehicles for the UN peacekeeping missions instead of weapons.     

He shared that NA had not bought any weapons since it purchased them from China in 2045 BS. According to him, the NA ought to obtain approval from the government and function within the parameter of the Acts and laws to procure weapons if need be.     

He denounced the news doing rounds in the media that the NA was going to buy weapons and no letter of credit (LC) was opened for the same yet as rumoured in the media.     

The Army Chief also urged not to disseminate untruthful news fulfilling the vested interest of a particular country or company. (RSS)
