By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Dec. 26: President of Nepal Chamber of Commerce (NCC) Rajendra Malla has said that illegal transactions should be controlled with the proper management of the border with India.
According to Malla, illegal business is being done by taking advantage of the open border between Nepal and India. He said that the government is also losing revenue due to illegal trade across the border.
Speaking at a programme organised by the Kailali Chamber of Commerce in Dhangadhi, President Malla said, "Nearly 40 per cent of illegal business is being done by taking advantage of the open border between Nepal and India.
It is also having a serious impact on the government revenue. For the country's trade balance, it is necessary to organise import and export." He also said that the NCC is ready to work hand in hand with the government for the management of imports and promoting exports.
He emphasised that the government should make the revenue system more flexible by expanding the tax net. President Malla said, “Revenue leakage from the border has not been controlled.
A situation has arisen where some people pay taxes and some do not. It is necessary to make the revenue system sound by increasing the scope of taxes.” He said that it was necessary to cooperate from the federal to the local level to make the tax revenue administration effective.
He said that the private sector was always committed to do disciplined business and a transparent tax system. He said that they are ready to work hand in hand with the government to build a self-sufficient economy.
He emphasised that the system of bill payment should be implemented compulsorily from the retail shop to the wholesale.Stating that most of the indicators of the economy are still negative, President Malla said that the difficult revenue system should be made effective while it is being difficult to cover even the recurrent expenditure from revenue.
