Fifty-seven long years have passed since The Rising Nepal came into being. As the pioneer broadsheet English daily of Nepal, TRN was born on December 16, 1965. ‘Pro Bono Publico’ (for the good of the public) was what the original motto of this oldest daily was. This publication still keeps on living up to its launching slogan. This paper was launched amid a specific world situation and domestic political environment. The world situation has undergone many changes since this paper was launched and national political situation has also witnessed a drastic change. But the principle of diplomacy, foreign relations and the core value of journalism still remain relevant. The central theme should always be to serve the interests of the people and the nation. We remain true to such journalistic ethos and ethical standard.
Its first editorial read: “….We intensively believe in the ideals of the United Nations and such question as understanding between the East and the West. Within such a general outlook, we are interested in telling about our country and the people…..” In those days, countries in Asia and Africa had been free from the controls of the protracted colonial rule but they were coming under the grip of the Cold War. They had to take side with the bloc led by the United of America or the one led by the then Soviet Union. Amidst that situation, it was necessary for the nation to take a neutral stance to safeguard her key interests. As mentioned in its first editorial, TRN’s main aim was to make the country known to the outside world and promote national interests.
With the emergence of TRN, the country was able to disseminate the information about the nation to foreign readers effectively. She was eager to share her aspirations, problems and vision with the international community. The country was in a much better situation to have her own position on different bilateral, regional and international issues. Before that, foreign readers had to rely on Indian media for knowing about Nepal and her standpoints on different matters. Therefore, the launch of TRN was helpful for the nation to communicate her genuine concerns with other countries in an efficient manner. Nepali advertisers had to publish their English language ads in Indian newspaper which was sometimes inconvenient. Launching of TRN made the task easier for the traders.
No doubt, TRN has remained committed to fostering quality journalism in the country. Since its start, this newspaper has come out without any halt or obstacle. As guided by the vision and provision of the Constitution of Nepal, 2015, TRN continues to strive for serving the nation and the people. The publication is fully devoted to contribute to strengthening the hard-won federal democratic republic and enhancing harmony among the diverse ethnic and cultural communities and groups speaking different languages practicing different cultures.
With TRN marking its 57th anniversary today, we this moment to express our sincere commitment to work harder in team spirit to raise the standard of its readability. We believe that we can achieve such objective by informing the people with factual that matters to them. We are ready to work with more innovative ideas, dedication and hard work in that direction. On this occasion, we would also like to express our gratitude to our readers and well-wishers for their trust and inspiration.
