By Mannu Shahi: Suman Thapa a.k.a. Swoopna Suman is one of the leading faces of the contemporary Nep-pop scene with over a dozen singles and an album released under his belt.

The singer enjoys a generous forgo of appreciation from his partisans, inciting his vibrant career arc since day one.

The songster’s official YouTube channel engrosses a staggering 335,000 subscribers who prefer to address themselves as “Swoopners”.

Born on December 2, 1995, in Dharan, the singer started developing an inclination towards music fairly young and had jotted down his first composition by the time he enrolled in seventh grade. By 20, the singer had already collaborated with various artists and released a few cover songs on YouTube, gradually curating a decent following. ‘Kasari Bhanu’ (2017) released from Channel Arbitrary broke the algorithm of the Internet making him an overnight sensation.

The singer manages to sustain his eminence with back-to-back releases, an ever-evolving growth curve, and constant collaborations with new producers/artistes/arrangers. His song writing mostly relates to a rather younger demographic as his forte seems to be emotionally permeated romantic tunes describing infatuations, long-term relationships, tragedy in love or the longing for a passionate reunion.

Penned and composed by Suman, the new single ‘Aasha’ released on December 2, 2022, is produced, mixed and mastered by Saswot Shrestha at Omniphonics Studio. Featuring additional session musicians Manice Gandharava on sarangi and Rubin Kumar Shrestha on flute, the video is a production of Garage Entertainment with Rupesh Shrestha on direction, editing and colour; Kaushal Gurung on co-direction; Saroj Kumar Khadka as the production manager; Jyotsna Yogi on assistance; Rashik Bhattarai on management; and Wear em all (Naxal) on wardrobe.

A sombre track concerning the heartache of departure, especially with one’s romantic interest, sang from the perspective of the leaving partner, delving within their anxiety, and hopes regarding the future.

The protagonist is reluctant because he will tremendously miss his spouse while he is away, and wishes time would freeze on their final night together. He dreads to live up to the next morning to face the ultimate parting moment which will be an emotional drain for both.

The track initiates with minimal guitar piece and wet-reverbed synth leading up to the calming bamboo flute melody, gentle guitar plucking and a short flute-guitar harmonized phrase building up to the verse. Suman, much like his contemporaries, sings in a rather lower and soothing conduct, the vocals are neat and linear but just as sincere and vulnerable.

The sarangi interlude in between paves way for the second verse which demonstrates a rather lighter mood as the music intensifies. The drums join along uplifting the entire track, and even the lyrics swift a bit towards positive attributes of the situation.

Layers of background vocals ornament the tune and the track elevates to its climax; unison of sarangi and guitar and flute melody create a peak momentum resolving at the outro: quiet and melancholic, as like the intro, weaving a full circle.

The singer describes the song as “a tune about hope and longing to be with our loved ones forever and the pain of going through the process of separation.”

In just seven hours of its release the song has already ensued 49K streams, so be sure to check it out yourself.
