Consensus forged to take forward Bill related to Investigation on enforced disappeared persons

Kathmandu, Sept 6: Political parties have agreed to take forward the Bill designed to amend the Act relating to the investigation of the enforced disappeared persons, truth, and reconciliation commission within the current session of the parliament. 

The meeting of the parliamentarian Committee of Law, Justice and Human Rights here today took the decision to this effect, according to Committee Chair Krishna Bhakta Pokharel. The Committee reached the decision for the same following various rounds of extensive consultations with the stakeholders and other related organizations, shared Pokharel.

The Committee has summoned its members who submitted applications to take forward the Bill designed to amend the Enforced Disappeared Persons, Truth and Reconciliation Commission Act-2071 BS.

They will appear in front of the Committee on coming Wednesday. The Committee is preparing to solicit suggestions from victim sides, stakeholders, and organizations such as Human Rights Commission among others.

During today's meeting, CPN (UML) parliamentary party's deputy leader Subash Nembang spoke of the need to accelerate the Bill at the earliest.

Similarly, CPN (Maoist Centre) deputy general-secretary and Committee member Barshaman Pun urged the concerned ones to prepare to conclude the works on the Bill.

The Interim Constitution of Nepal-2007 mentioned providing relief packages to the victims or their families, investigating truth about the persons who seriously violated human rights during the conflict and enabling environment for reconciliation in the society as per the reports of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Commission for Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons.
