By Nisha Rai Dharan, May 7: As the local level election nears, the candidates from across the political spectrum in Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City have thrown all their might on door-to-door campaigns to seek the people’s support.
The local leaders, cadres and independent candidates vying for the various posts in the local bodies are focused on door-to-door electoral campaigns.
Lately, candidates of mayor and deputy mayor posts at Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City and candidates of ward chairman and members are visiting voters' doorsteps to appeal to people to vote in large numbers in their support.
At the campaign, candidates talked about their commitment and asked everyone to vote for the change.
There are a total of 100,324 voters in Dharan. Of them, 52,916 are women and 47,408 are men.
Twenty candidates, including from Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML, are running for mayoral post in Dharan. Candidates from all parties are now requesting the voters to cast their votes in their favor.
The main problem of Dharan is drinking water. Despite the commitments made by various political parties and candidates in previous elections to resolve the drinking water problem in the city, the problem has not been addressed yet.
Even this time, all the candidates for mayoral posts have pledged to solve the problem of drinking water.
In the local level election, Kishor Rai of NC and Aindra Begha of CPN (Maoist Centre) are competing for the posts of mayor and deputy-mayor in Dharan Sub-Metropolitan from the ruling coalition.
Similarly, CPN-UML has fielded Manju Bhandari for the post of mayor and Padam Iswo for the post of deputy mayor. Rai, who started his political career in 2047 BS, has assured that the people of Dharan would not be given a chance to complain.
Similarly, Aindra Bikram Begha, candidate for deputy-mayoral post from the alliance has promised to play a crucial role in solving the issue of landless squatters and drinking water problem in Dharan.
Likewise, UML’s mayoral candidate Bhandari had won the post of deputy mayor in 2017 local election. Bhandari also took over as acting mayor of Dharan following the death of late mayor Tara Subba. She is the only female candidate below 40 years of age from a host of the UML candidates contesting polls for various posts in 11 sub-metropolitan cities of the country.
UML has expressed commitment to completing the construction of cable car in the tourist area of the city and developing tourism infrastructure in the Bishnupaduka temple area. It has also forwarded the concept of Dharan industrial village, reconstruction of Kirant-era Bijaypur palace and construction of smart bus park.
Similarly, UML deputy mayor candidate Iswo pledged to work honestly after his victory.
He has forwarded special plans in the field of education, health and tourism and to make Dharan a prosperous city.
