BY OUR CORRESPONDENT Biratnagar, May 1: Government schools may not have to face shortage of students if they can conduct teaching- learning activities in favourable environment. Shree Pokhariya Secondary School, in Biratnagar, Morang, has set an example that a government school can also be students’ choice if it can adopt technology-friendly teaching learning for quality education.

The students’ as well as guardians’ attraction towards the school is such that a total of 1470 examinees attended entrance examinations for new enrollments on Friday conducted for grade six, seven, eight and nine for the total seat of 365, Khem Raj Bhattarai, headmaster of the school said.

The school has a capacity to enroll about 100 new students for each grade. But, 307 students sat for grade six entrance, 378 students for grade seven, 501 students for grade eight and 284 for grade nine. The school will be able to enroll only about 25 percent of those students, a constraint imposed by its limited infrastructure. Students and guardians are impressed with the school because of its better performance.

Though the federal government allocated Rs. 120,000,000 for the development of the school’s physical infrastructure, it cannot leverage the amount because of a land dispute, said headmaster Bhattarai. Besides the general subjects, the school will conduct entrance for technical stream student and for primary level from grade one to grade five. The school has been running computer engineering course from grade nine to twelve in technical stream.

The school has been conducting classes in morning and day shift. In last academic session, the school had enrolled 2,865 students in total. Of them, 413 are appearing for Secondary Education Examination this year.

The school has been delivering classes in both medium –  English and Nepali – through different sections.
