Fair price shops from September 15
The government is preparing to operate fair price shops in different parts of the country to stop black marketing and arbitrary rise in the price of essential goods during festivals. As the festivities, including Dashain, Tihar and Chhath approaching, the government has decided to set up fair price shops more than four dozen districts, including the Kathmandu Valley from September 15.
Ministry of Forests and Environment initiates Nepal's first NAQMAP
The Department of Environment Nepal, under the Ministry of Forests and Environment, launched the development of the country’s first National Air Quality Management Action Plan (NAQMAP). The Action plan was launched in collaboration with the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and the United Kingdom International Development.
Sanitary pads meant for girls go waste in stores
National laws prohibits the Chhaupadi practice, a traditional and harmful custom that forces menstruating women and girls into isolation. But it is still deep-rooted in Nepal’s rural districts like Baitadi. Even school-going girls continue to fall victim to this practice. They are forced to live in cow sheds or basements during their menstrual period.
National Assembly approves Civil Service Bill unanimously
The National Assembly has approved the much-awaited Civil Service Bill unanimously along with a provision of the cooling-off period. Prior to that, the Legislative Management Committee of the National Assembly had finalised the provision on retirement age of the civil servants. The committee failed to reach a decision Monday, as Minister for Federal Affairs and General Administration, Bhagawati Neupane, proposed for increasing retirement age to 59 from 58 in the fiscal year the Bill turns into a law. The lawmakers of the ruling parties had agreed to the proposal but the opposition MPs refused to go against the endorsement of the House of Representatives.
Works afoot for commercial production of methane gas
A formal process aimed at commercial production of methane gas in Dailekh has finally begun. A technical team from Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) has arrived in Jaljale, Bhairabi Rural Municipality–1 of Dailekh district, to conduct a feasibility study for the purpose. This follows the preliminary confirmation that the area has approximately 112 billion cubic metres of methane gas reserves.
