UK positive to provide visas to children of ex-Gurkha
The United Kingdom (UK) has been positive about granting the children of the retired Gurkha soldiers residential visas to remain in the UK if they are under the age of 18 at the time of their parent's retirement. The British side seemed open to the demand in Monday's meeting of the technical committee formed as part of the efforts made by the British and Nepali governments to solve the problems being faced by former Gurkha soldiers, informed retired Gurkha Jud Bahadur Gurung. Gurung also said that they made it clear that pension was their main issue. "The UK side has said they will get back with details after consulting with the minister," he said. The Embassy of Nepal in London also confirmed that a technical-level meeting was held between the embassy officials, the UK's Ministry of Defence and representatives of former Gurkha soldiers to address the demands of the ex-soldiers.
Obstruction in Arun III project continues for 12 days
It has been 12 days since the construction work of the powerhouse of the 900-MW Arun III Hydropower Project being developed in Sankhuwasabha district has been stopped. It has caused a loss of Rs. 50 million a day to the country. Meanwhile, there has not been any effort to resume the work at the site. According to the Project Development Agreement (PDA) signed by the Investment Board Nepal (IBN) with the developer company Sutlej Jalvidyut Nigam of India, the Government of Nepal should pay compensation of Rs. 50 million per day if the work at the project site is stopped due to the obstruction of the locals. Citing this clause, the developer has already written to the government after the locals began obstructing the construction work.
Father’s Day being marked today
Hindus across the country and beyond are celebrating the Father’s Day on Thursday. Children observe the Father’s Day, which falls on the day of Kuse Aunsi during the Nepali month of Bhadra, by showing reverence to their fathers, as well as by offering sweets, gifts and delicious foods. Those who have lost their fathers visit Gokarneshwor Municipality in Kathmandu where they bathe in the holy Bagmati River and pray for the eternal peace of their fathers’ soul. People visit the Gokarna Mahadev temple, in the municipality, and other sacred places to bath and make offering in honour of their deceased father to mark the day. Devotees also make donations in memory of their dead fathers. They also bring holy Kush, a grass considered a symbol of purity, into their houses on this day.

Nembang to be cremated with state honours today
The last rites of late Chairman of Constituent Assembly and CPN-UML vice chairman Subas Nembang will be performed at Pashupati Aryaghat with state honour on Thursday. The government has given a public holiday on Thursday across the country to mourn Nembang’s demise. Meanwhile, the body of the Nembang was taken to his residence in Baluwatar on Wednesday after his two sons arrived from Australia and the UK. Late Nembang is survived by his two sons and two daughters. Both daughters were in Kathmandu at the time of his passing. His body was in CPN-UML's party office in Chyasal, Lalitpur, all day on Tuesday, and from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm on Wednesday. \ At the afternoon, the body was taken to his residence for ritual offerings from his family members.
Papillomavirus vaccination begins from seven hospitals
The government started a free Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign across the country to prevent cervical cancer in women on Wednesday. Minister for Health and Population Mohan Bahadur Basnet initiated the campaign in an official programme at Thapathali-based Paropakar Maternity and Women's Hospital (PMWH). Minister Basnet inaugurated the campaign by handing over a vaccine carrier to PMWH Director Dr. Shree Prasad Adhikari. A 14-year-old girl of Dhumbarahi, Kathmandu, was then administered the first HPV vaccination of the nation-wide campaign during the programme. According to the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), HPV vaccines will be provided from seven hospitals in seven provinces. With the PMWH for Bagmati Province, Biratnagar's Koshi Hospital in Koshi, Birgunj's Narayani Hospital in Madhes, Pokhara-based Gandaki Academy of Health Sciences in Gandaki, Nepalgunj-based Bheri Hospital in Lumbini, Birendranagar-based Provincial Hospital in Karnali and Amargadhi-based Dadeldhura Hospital in Sudurpashchim are providing the vaccines.
