The Lalitpur Metropolitan City (LMC) has asked the federal government to take the lead in establishing a waste processing plant. Writing a letter to Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' on Wednesday, LMC Mayor Chiri Babu Maharjan said that a processing plant was a must to solve the problem of legacy waste at the Okharpauwa landfill site and to generate electricity, gas and fertiliser from the disposed garbage. Legacy waste are the waste materials that have been collected and kept for years at some dedicated place. Talking to The Rising Nepal on Thursday, Mayor Maharjan said that this proposal was based on the learnings and observations he made during his recent trip to India. Maharjan led an LMC team to India from November 1 to 11 at the invitation of the Indian government. There, he visited New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Indore, Pune and Gorakhpur and gathered information about waste management, traffic management, road infrastructure, public security and good governance.
The state-owned enterprise, Food Management and Trading Company (FMTC), has started buying paddy from farmers. The company started purchasing paddy almost two weeks ago, said Mohan Prakash Chand, Chief Executive Officer at the FMTC. Stating that paddy procurement has started from Nepalgunj, he said that the company has planned to purchase paddy from other Tarai districts. The company will purchase paddy from Mahendranagar, Dhangadhi, Nepalgunj, Bhairahawa, Birgunj, Janakpur, Lahan, Rajapur, Biratnagar, Birtamod and Tulsipur, said Chand. “We have already instructed related depots of the districts to purchase paddy.
Murrah (water buffaloes of advanced breed) gifted to Nepal by the Indian government for crossbreeding Nepal’s buffaloes have been sent to the National Livestock Breeding Office in Banke, Pokhara and Lahan. Indian officials handed over the bulls that entered Nepal via Nepalgunj to the Nepali authorities on Thursday. Dr. Madhav Aryal, chief of the National Livestock Resource Management and Promotion Office, said that after completing the health examination and customs procedures, the bulls were sent to the National Livestock Breeding Office, Gaughat of Banke, Pokhara and Lahan. He said that the health condition of the buffaloes brought from the Central Buffalo Research Institute in Hisar, India, was good and after all the buffaloes were found healthy, they were sent to the three animal breeding centres. Earlier, Dr. Rajesh Kumar, a senior veterinarian at the Central Buffalo Research Institute in Hisar, India, handed over the bulls to Aryal at the holding yard of the Animal Quarantine Check Post in Nepalgunj. According to Aryal, out of 15 buffaloes received from India, three have been sent to the National Livestock Breeding Office, Gaughat of Banke, while seven have been sent to the National Livestock Breeding Office, Pokhara and five have been sent to the National Livestock Breeding Office, Lahan. Dr. Bhaju Ram Mahato, Chief Animal Development Officer of the National Livestock Breeding Office, Pokhara, and Shivanath Mahato, Chief Animal Development Officer of the National Livestock Breeding Office, Lahan, reached Nepalgunj to collect the bulls. Stakeholders have committed to organising different activities to create a country free from violence against women in the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence. The 16 days of activism is an international campaign kicks off on November 25 and runs until December 10 every year. The first day of the campaign concides with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the concluding day is the Human Rights Day. While different organisations and institutions have put forth different plans for the campaign, they all gathered at the Nepal Police Headquarters on Friday and expressed their commitment to the campaign. Representatives from different concerned ministries, government bodies, NGOs and INGOs pledged proper coordination in ending violence against women at the programme organised by the Women, Children and Senior Citizen Service Directorate (WCSCSD) under the Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Nepal Police.
Residents in the northern part of Damak in Jhapa district are worried after a herd of 28 to 30 elephants has been spotted in their area for the past few days. The situation is particularly alarming as these elephants could enter the settlement any time, especially during the night and go berserk. Locals are resorting to various measures to drive away the elephants. They blow sirens, use tractors and make fires.
