The construction of three concrete bridges in Khaptadchanna Rural Municipality, under Seti Lokmarg (highway), has come to a halt due to contractor negligence. Despite a five-year contract, the work remains incomplete. The Seti Lokmarg Southern Section Project Office in Achham initiated construction by asking for bids in 2018. However, progress on all three bridge projects was obstructed as the contractor failed to start work promptly after signing the agreement. The contract for each of the three bridges was awarded to different contractors. Specifically, Khampa TDR JV secured the contract for Rs. 65 million in Jadar, Khaptadchanna Rural Municipality-1. Rayamajhi Caravan JV was awarded the contract for Rs. 50 million in Kuchekhola (Kalipchai) of Khaptadchhanna Rural Municipality-2, and Ambhar Construction secured the contract for Rs. 50 million in Bidigad, Khaptadchhanna Rural Municipality-7.
Farmers in Sarlahi were worried for the paddy planted in their field because it had been affected as the rain stopped and the crop could not get enough irrigation this year. There was no alternative means of irrigation for the crop and the farmers were worried with possible draught. It is the time of paddy harvesting in several places of plain areas of the country however the farmers are afraid with drought. In Sarlahi, there is no irrigation facility in several places like Hariwan, Lalbandi, Ishwarpur in northern part and Chandranagar, Bramhapuri, Haripurva, Parsa in eastern part. The farmers were using pump-sets continuously for the irrigation where it was available but others remained waiting for rain where pump-sets don’t work. Aashish Waiba, a local resident of Hariwan Municipality, said that farmers who don’t have pump-sets were worried in lack of rain. “Those who are completely dependent on rain water are worried,” he added. This year, the farmers who had planted most of their paddy in July and August with little rain were expecting rain in October but draught has worried them. “Paddy harvesting time is to start and the rain has stopped,” Waiba said.
Parasar Secondary School is teaching traditional craft of making plates out of leaves. Parasar Secondary School located in Vyas Municipality-5 is conserving the traditional craft of making dishware out of leaves, which is almost dying out. Students too are enthusiastic to learn this traditional craft. The growing use of plates and bowls made up of plastic has displaced the use of environment friendly plates and bowls. The school is imparting practical knowledge of traditional craft along with regular courses. “Students are taught to make bowls and plates out of leaves as a part of vocational education,” said principal Ram Datta Poudel. Students learn more through practical knowledge compared to traditional lecture method. Rita Bhandari, the coordinator of vocational education in the school, said, “Students of both gender are showing equal interest in learning this traditional craft.”
