No sooner had the ruling Nepali Congress begun to win higher number of seats in the federal and provincial polls held under the first-past-the-post system than CPN-UML chair KP Sharma Oli called CPN-Maoist Centre chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda over phone, urging him to go ahead together. “We have gone far apart as animosity intensified. Let’s sit and talk. The forces that wish to keep us at a distance are still active,” said Oli, according to a report of online news portal. It is no-brainer to understand why Oli mellowed his tone for his number one political nemesis. After his party was deflated in the crucial polls, Oli seeks to lure Prachanda into forming a UML-led coalition government by disbanding the present five-party coalition that replaced his government amidst the tumultuous political development some one-and-a-half years ago.

Many Nepali women, men, and children have been victims of human trafficking. Previously, traffickers used to take many Nepalis to different cities in India, where the victims would be forced to engage in physical labour as household, restaurant, or factory workers, while many Nepali women would be sold to brothels besides being forced to work as labourers or household maids. In current times, when many countries have opened their borders to our migrant labour, Nepalis are being trafficked to other places for the same reasons. Traffickers smuggle Nepalis in order to offer them with lucrative professions. Most times, trafficked Nepalis are forced to labour as modern-day slaves, and some, particularly women, are mistreated physically and sexually. There have been reports of women being sexually molested while working in other countries.

The November 20 elections to the House of Representatives (HoR) underlie a change in the electoral landscape. The heterogeneity of the nation’s population, parties, mixed election system and raising of rich tapestry of issues by political leaders beyond the normative spirit of constitution have produced a very uneasy situation for leaders of Nepali Congress (NC) and Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist-Leninist (CPN-UML). They habitually competed the elections as rival power blocs, craving for prime ministerial sorting, not common good. The electoral outcome, however, produced a hung parliament, with no power bloc winning a clear majority of seats in the 375-member HoR to form a new government, keep its efficiency in public policy matters and shore up political stability without enticing the cooperation of those outside their electoral coalition.
