Kaski, April 15: Pokhara Metropolitan City has brought its Disaster Risk Reduction Centre (DRRC) into operation.

The Centre has been established in the context of increasing natural disasters in Pokhara. It will make disaster management more effective and play a coordinating role in preparedness, rescue, and relief management during potential disasters such as floods, landslides, and fires.

The DRRC is located in the premises of the fire station at Shantiban, Pokhara-9. The metropolitan city constructed the Metropolitan Police Office and the DRRC building at a cost of Rs 52.1 million. The centre was inaugurated on Tuesday, coinciding with the New Year's Day.

Mayor of Pokhara Metropolitan City, Dhanaraj Acharya, said that having the police and DRRC at the same location would help in disaster management and maintaining peace and security in the metropolis, as well as in storing disaster materials.

According to him, technology will be installed at the centre to monitor, collect information and analyse high-risk areas. Pokhara Metropolitan City is a high-risk area in terms of disasters. The lakes, caves, and rivers like Seti River here are prone to natural disasters every year.

Mayor Acharya stated that the Pokhara Metropolitan City has been working in a planned manner to reduce the loss of life and property caused by natural and man-made disasters.

He said ward-level disaster management committees have been formed in all the 33 wards to prepare the local community as the first responders.(RSS)
