By TRN Online, Kathmadnu, April 1: The parliamentary party meeting of the CPN (UML), which has taken to the streets in protest against the arrest of party Chairman KP Sharma Oli, has begun at the party headquarters in Chyasal.
The meeting started a short while ago at the party’s central office in Chyasal, Lalitpur.
According to UML leaders, the meeting, attended by members of the National Assembly as well, will select the leader of the parliamentary party in the House of Representatives, along with the chief whip and other key parliamentary positions.
The meeting is also expected to discuss the role the party will play in the upcoming federal parliament session, which has been called for Thursday at 2:00 PM.
UML has moved to choose its parliamentary party leader a day before the House meeting.
Following the electoral defeat of party chairman KP Sharma Oli and General Secretary Shankar Pokharel, senior leader and party vice-chair Ram Bahadur Thapa is almost certain to be selected as the leader of the parliamentary party.
UML had secured 25 seats in the election. The party has already announced that it will challenge Oli’s arrest through both political and legal means. It has also stated that it will intensify protests both on the streets and inside parliament.
Party officials said the current meeting is likely to finalize strategies for strengthening pressure through street demonstrations and parliamentary obstruction, making both the streets and the House central to its protest campaign.
