Kathmandu, March 26: A House of Representatives (HoR) member, Gita Chaudhari, arrived in federal parliament hall in cultural attire.
She also took oath of office and secrecy in her mother language, Tharu, on Thursday.
The federal parliament secretariat had issued a notice to all newly elected HoR members to appear before the parliament hall for oath taking either in national attire or cultural dress. Chaudhari selected her own cultural dress for the ceremony.
"It is a glorious day for my community," she said, exuding pride after taking oath of office and secrecy. It is the dress- lahanga and choliya- her mother had prepared.
She further said, "I came in cultural dress to sport indigenous identity in the spirit of federalism. I have equal respect and love to my mother and motherland."
Another lawmaker found in cultural attire is HoR member Sudhan Gurung. He was in Gurung dress. "We don't betray people and their aspiration," he spoke briefly to the media.
Bhim Kumari Budhamagar, who also donned cultural dress, said, "We must not forget our culture."
Pramod Kumar Mahato, a lawmaker from Mahottarai district, was dressed in kurta suruwal. "The costume gives a sense of ownership and bolsters national feeling," he observed, adding that he, however, wears other normal dresses in usual occasions.
Bhumika Shrestha, a transgender HoR member representing the Rastriya Swatantra Party, made her presence in haku patasi, a Newari costume. She had also worn the Newari jewelries. "People should be served and community respected together," she viewed.
Most of the lawmakers were however in national dress- daura suruwal for men and sari cholo for women.
The cultural mosaic of Nepal was well reflected in the Thursday swearing-in of lawmakers.(RSS)
