blog

Lumbini, March 24: A sanitation study centre has been established for waste management in Buddha's birthplace, Lumbini.

The centre aims to link waste management with sustainable development and the green economy. The Sanitation Study Centre has been operated in Dhodahawa, Lumbini Sanskritik Municipality–5.

The Lumbini Sanskritik Municipality, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and The Coca-Cola Foundation, has established this centre.

Chief Minister of Lumbini Province, Chet Narayan Acharya, inaugurated the Sanitation Study Centre here today.

On the occasion, Chief Minister Acharya said that an important beginning had been made to make the Lumbini area a model in cleanliness. He mentioned that the image of Lumbini, which sees a tourist inflow of 1.3 to 1.4 million annually, had been tarnished due to the rubbish in the past, would now change.

Chief Minister Acharya clarified that waste management is not only the responsibility of Lumbini Cultural Municipality but also a shared responsibility of the provincial government. He stated that the provincial government is committed to continuously cooperating in the implementation of such plans and mentioned that this project is a matter of pride for the province.

At the programme, Provincial Assembly members Ratna Bahadur Khatri and Chandrakesh Gupta, along with Acting Mayor of Lumbini Cultural Municipality Kalpana Harijan, said that establishing a sanitation centre will facilitate waste management in the Lumbini area.

The Sanitation Study Centre aims to strengthen waste management systems, boost plastic circularity, and promote sustainable tourism in this World Heritage Site.

Through the The Coca-Cola Foundation Plastic Circularity Project, the UNDP is expanding efforts to build greener, more resilient communities with improved livelihoods and environmental outcomes, it is stated.(RSS)
