Kathmandu, March 24: Training has been conducted for healthcare workers on how to safely manage critically ill patients during their air rescue.

The training entitled 'Advanced Training and Training for Trainees Program in Retrieval Medicine' organised by Nepal Mediciti Hospital, in collaboration with Scotland's Emergency Medical Retrieval Service (EMRS), kicked off here on Monday.

Dr Sanjay Karki, Chief of Emergency and High Altitude Services at the hospital, said that the training will especially be focussed on the safe management, transfer and treatment procedures of critically ill patients during rescue by helicopter.

"Training will be provided with practical exercises on how to safely transfer patients, proper positioning of the patient inside the helicopter, and necessary care during the journey," he said.

So far seven hospitals in the country have 'heli roof' where choppers can land. Spokesperson of the Health Ministry and Head of Health Emergency and Disaster Management Unit, Dr Prakash Budhathoki, shared that the government has been imparting training for emergency health treatment.

"We have only 104 trained doctors and medics. We have been imparting training to ambulance drivers and technicians to increase this number. Similarly, we have been imparting basic survival training," he added.

Expert trainer from Scotland as well as doctors invited from Switzerland, India and Japan would also facilitate the training sessions.

Chairperson of Nepal Mediciti Hospital, Dr Upendra Mahato expressed the belief that such type of training would strengthen collaboration between health institutions and stakeholders of Nepal and advance country's health service in line with international standards.

Around 30 health workers and staffs of different hospitals and health institutions involved in pre-hospital care and emergency service have been participating in the training. (RSS)
