NHRC urges all agencies to enforce laws on women rights

blog

Kathmandu, March 8: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged all government agencies and stakeholders to enforce the constitutional provisions, and international legal instruments Nepal is party to, for the enforcement of women and girls' rights.

The laws and provision on women and girls' rights should be implemented for ensuring equality, empowerment and respect. The women and girls must be protected from violence, exploitation and discrimination, NHRC added.

NHRC's Spokesperson Dr Tikaram Pokharel issued a statement and made aware the government and its agencies to break the structural barriers and wipeout harmful practices and social ills.

In a press statement issued on the 116th International Women's Day today, Spokesperson Dr Pokharel said, "Although constitution, and the national and international laws have adequately ensured women rights, traditional harmful practices have been causing physical and mental violence to adolescent girls. Domestic violence, human trafficking, early marriage, digital violence, sexual violence, rape, social discrimination, economic equality, low political participation, impunity, meagre access to justice are some of the challenges before realization of women and girls' rights."

NHRC has been regularly conducting investigation and monitoring of human rights violation and recommending the government accordingly. Specific reports and publications are made on gender auditing, rape and chhaupadi. Based on reports, the government is suggested amending relevant laws and policies.

The International Women's Day (March 8) is being observed under the theme of 'Rights. Justice. Action. For all women and girls' across the world for this year.(RSS)
