President of the Nepali Congress Gagan Kumar Thapa

By TRN Online, Kathmandu, Feb.19: President of the Nepali Congress Gagan Kumar Thapa has extended heartfelt greetings and best wishes to all Nepali sisters and brothers on the occasion of National Democracy Day.

Issuing a message of best wishes on the occasion of Democracy Day on Thursday, he recalled that the historic people’s revolution of Nepali date 2007 B.S. (1951 A.D.) ended the 104-year-long autocratic Rana regime and established democracy in the country. He noted that the movement, led by the Nepali Congress, marked the beginning of Nepal’s modern history.

He said that the people’s revolution, which began on November 11, 1950, not only brought political change but also paved the way for progressive transformation in the economic, social, cultural, and educational sectors.

Emphasizing that the country took a courageous step from a medieval feudal structure toward a modern democratic journey, he said democracy laid a strong foundation for nationalism, citizens’ rights, and public participation.

Thapa also mentioned that the People’s Movement of 1990 (2046 B.S.) and the 2006/07 movement (2062/63 B.S.), which led the country toward federalism and republicanism, are the continuation of the revolution that began on Falgun 7.

Leader Thapa paid tribute to the known and unknown martyrs who sacrificed their lives in various movements for national independence and citizens’ rights.

He expressed his belief that true respect for the martyrs would be achieved only by safeguarding the Constitution of Nepal, institutionalizing the federal democratic republican system of governance, and making the country economically prosperous.

He called on everyone to unite in nation-building while upholding democratic values and ideals.
