Voting in UML convention postponed for today

By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Dec. 17: The voting process to elect the new party leadership has been postponed for Wednesday in the 11th National Convention of the CPN-UML.

Shankar Pokharel, candidate for the position of General Secretary, said the voting process is expected to begin at 8 a.m. on Wednesday. He also noted that due to cold weather, there might be further delays in starting the process.

The voting, initially planned for Tuesday at 9 am, had first been postponed to Tuesday evening. However, as preparations could not be completed by 8 p.m., the UML Central Election Commission decided to defer it again. 

The election, held at the ongoing general convention in Bhrikutimandap, will see the participation of 2,263 delegates. The General Convention will elect 19 office bearers and 301 central committee members. 

Incumbent party chair KP Sharma Oli and Vice-Chair Ishwar Pokharel are contesting for the chairperson’s post, each leading separate panels.

Meanwhile, 11 candidates were unanimously elected unopposed as central committee members. The Election Commission also announced that the candidacies of Pasang Sherpa and Dharmalal Giri were cancelled. Additionally, 14 central-level candidates, including one contender for deputy general secretary, withdrew their nominations.
