By Our Correspondent,Sarlahi, Dec. 7: Nepali Congress general secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has said that there is no alternative to the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5, 2026.

Speaking to journalists in Malangawa, Sarlahi, on Saturday, Thapa said the current government has no option but to hold the elections on the scheduled date. He added that, given the current situation where the constitution has suffered significant setbacks, the March 5 election will help prevent further damage.

Thapa confirms that the Nepali Congress has formally decided to proceed with election preparations. “Political parties are ready for the elections,” he said, adding that it is the government’s responsibility to address any doubts or concerns relating to the election process.

He informed that during an all-stakeholder meeting convened by Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Friday, the government was urged to ensure election security and treat all parties and groups equally while creating a fair election environment.

Thapa urged the government to create a fair and secure election environment without discriminating against any old or new political parties or groups.

Thapa also said that the party’s 15th general convention must take place before the March 5 elections. He claimed there are no internal disagreements or confusion regarding the convention and that it will provide the party with new policies, messages, and leadership ahead of the polls.

“Although time is short, we will participate in the elections with new leadership, even if the preparation period is short. We are moving forward with both the election and the convention simultaneously,” he added.

The NC General Secretary announced his candidacy for the party presidency in the 15th general convention and informed that he is preparing to tour the country in the coming days to seek support from party leaders and cadres.

Thapa also clarified that he intends to run as a candidate from Kathmandu in the upcoming March 5 election.
