108 parties registered with EC for HoR polls

By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Nov. 30: A total of 108 political parties have officially registered with the Election Commission (EC) to participate in the upcoming House of Representatives (HoR) election, scheduled for March 5, 2026, EC said. 

In total, 139 political parties have registered with the commission so far, but only those officially recognised by the EC will be allowed to register their parties for the election purpose, said Kul GC, the EC’s Co-spokesperson.

The extended deadline for political parties to register for the HoR election was set to end on Sunday. 

Earlier, the EC decided to extend the deadline for four days following a high volume of applications and requests from political parties and other stakeholders. 

Originally, the registration period ran from November 17 to 26. Given the large number of service seekers, the EC extended the deadline to accommodate the influx of applications.

To be officially recognised as a participant in the election, each party must meet certain criteria and provide the necessary documentation, according to the EC.

In addition, 13 political parties have successfully registered for the National Assembly election, which is set for January 24, 2026.

Meanwhile, a discussion has been held regarding the addition of more voting centers for the upcoming HoR poll.

A meeting was convened on Friday at the central office of the Election Commission in Kathmandu to deliberate on the matter of increasing voting stations.

Election Commission spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai informed that the discussion was based on reports received from various districts about the need for additional voting centers. 

A committee tasked with determining the voting centers has been formed under the leadership of Election Commissioner Sagun Shumsher JBR.

 The committee also includes the Home Secretary, the Secretary of the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, and the Secretary of the Ministry of General Administration.

The committee discussed the reports from various districts regarding the proposed addition of voting centers. Based on the requirements, work is underway to finalise the locations for the election voting centers, informed Bhattarai. 

He clarified that the meeting was only a discussion on whether to add more voting centers, with no final decision made yet. 

The Election Commission has currently set up 10,756 voting centers across the country for the upcoming elections.
