By Shashidhar Parajuli, Biratnagar, Nov. 18: Police have seized clothes worth millions from the house and warehouse of Bablu Agrawal, who is accused of smuggling clothes from India, located at Biratnagar.
A team of police deployed under the District Police Office, Morang, raided the home and shop of Agrawal on Tuesday morning after receiving information that Agrawal was preparing to send expensive kurtas brought from India by evading customs to Kathmandu.
They recovered clothes worth millions; however, the accused absconded.
Based on the information, the Police raided the cargo area of Biratnagar Airport and then took it to the home and shop of Agrawal. Police recovered 89 sets of Kurta-suruwal along with two sacks of clothes.
An additional team led by a police inspector was deployed to Bablu Agrawal's residence and warehouse in Ganesh Chowk, Biratnagr-4.
District Police Office said that 45 sets of more identical kurtas and suruwal were found during searches conducted at the house and warehouse.
The market value of the seized clothes is estimated to be 4,000 to 5,000 rupees per piece, according to which the total value of the seized clothes is estimated to reach lakhs.
The preliminary investigation has revealed that Agrawal has been bringing clothes to Nepal from India by evading customs.
It has been found that Agrawal illegally brings clothes to Biratnagar by 'carrying' them from the border areas of Morang and Sunsari.
The clothes were sold and distributed from Agrawal's shop 'Maa Durga Imperial' in Biratnagar-5 and another shop in Bargachhi.
It is said that Agrawal used his own shop's invoices to make illegal goods appear legal when sending clothes to major markets including Kathmandu.
Chief of the District Police Office, Morang, Superintendent of Police (SP) Kabit Katwal said that the special team has been mobilized to search for abounded business, am.
He also expressed his commitment that the police are conducting a special campaign to control customs fraud and illegal smuggling and that those involved in any illegal activities will be brought to justice.
Police have seized a vehicle that was used to transport clothes.
