By Nisha Rai,Dharan, Aug. 27: BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences has introduced the first radiofrequency ablation (RFA) service for the treatment of chronic pain in Dharan.

This significant medical advancement was initiated by the Department of Anaesthesiology at the Institute, according to Dr. Abhijit Kumar, Co-Spokesperson for the BP Institute. He stated that, following the launch of the service, the Institute successfully performed its first radiofrequency ablation of the Gasserian ganglion for trigeminal neuralgia.

Trigeminal neuralgia is a severe and often debilitating nerve disorder, characterised by intense, stabbing or burning pain typically affecting one side of the face. Radiofrequency ablation is an effective option for patients who have not responded to conventional drug therapies. The procedure uses radiofrequency energy to target and destroy a small segment of the affected nerve, significantly reducing pain for an extended period.

Dr. Kumar explained that the procedure is performed using image-guided technology, which is crucial for ensuring accuracy and safety.

Radiofrequency ablation is particularly beneficial for managing spinal facet joint pain, occipital neuralgia, tympanic neuralgia, pain resulting from hip or shoulder arthritis, bicipital neuralgia, and certain types of neuropathic and cancer-related pain. It can also offer relief for chronic muscular pain or post-surgical pain.

When carried out with appropriate patient selection, expert experience, and proper imaging guidance, RFA can reduce long-term pain and decrease reliance on medication, thereby improving patients' overall quality of life.

Dr. Kumar remarked that the introduction of this service marks a major milestone for the Institute and represents a new frontier in specialised pain management in eastern Nepal.

In a related development, BP Foundation has launched the Dexa Scan service, starting from Monday, aimed at enhancing the treatment of patients with osteoarthritis.

According to Dr. Kumar, a Dexa Scan is a radiological test used to measure bone density. It is essential in the timely diagnosis and proper treatment of bone-weakening conditions such as osteoporosis, which commonly affect the ageing population. However, people of various ages can also be at risk. Early detection through Dexa Scans allows for timely intervention and management, potentially preventing the progression of such conditions.

Currently, the Dexa Scan is available daily at the Foundation’s Orthopaedic OPD. The cost of the test has been set between Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 2,500, as per Dr. Kumar.
