By A STAFF REPORTER,Kathmandu, June 26: President Ramchandra Paudel has said that Nepal’s diverse ethnic communities, with their unique languages, cultures, dramas, songs, and music, have significantly contributed to uniting Nepali society and strengthening the feeling of national unity.

Addressing the Nepal Music and Drama National Academy Award Ceremony 2024, held at the Office of the President on Wednesday, President Paudel said that Nepal’s society is as diverse as its geography.

He said, “In the country of various ethnic groups, languages, and cultural traits, music and drama are not merely entertainment but also a heritage of identity.”

He emphasised that everyone had a responsibility to preserve, promote and develop indigenous languages, culture, music, and theatre, which reflect Nepali folk life. He also pointed out the need for globalising these art forms. “I appeal not only to the government but also to Nepalis diaspora. I want Nepali music and theatre to be performed globally and Nepal to become a centre of musical and dramatic thought worldwide,” he said.

President Paudel also pointed out that political changes in Nepal have fostered new perspectives on art, enabling the establishment of institutions like the Nepal Music and Drama National Academy. He stated that as society evolves, its heartbeat is mirrored in songs, art, and culture, which keep our identity alive. “Protecting art and culture is protecting the soul of the nation. Our indigenous art and creativity are powerful mediums to introduce Nepal and Nepalis globally, so the state must not be stingy in supporting talent and development,” he added.

Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation Minister Badri Pandey described the lifetime achievement awards presented by the Nepal Academy of Music and Drama as historic honours dedicated to two generations of creators. He said, “Their dedication has kept Nepal’s literary and cultural journey alive. We are no longer bound to listen to foreign songs; our own words, voices, and music now resonate worldwide.”

Minister Pandey expressed confidence that preserving and promoting cultural heritage through experienced artists is possible and that the event conveyed the message of passing on intangible cultural assets to future generations.

On the occasion, President Paudel honoured senior singer Deep Shrestha with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Similarly, senior theatre artist Hari Bahadur Thapa was awarded in the drama category, senior singer Kunti Moktan in the music category, senior dramatist Bed Kumari Neupane in the theatre category, senior dance director Bhuwandas Shrestha in the dance category, senior researcher Krishna Prasad Paudel in dance research and exploration, senior folk singer Narayan Rayamajhi in folk music, Kusheshwar Rai in traditional and classical music, and senior instrumentalist Raju Agrawal in the instrumental music category.
