By Hari Krishna Sharma,Muktinath, Apr. 29: Yogesh Gauchan, a Member of the House of Representatives from Mustang, a district beyond the Himalayas, has been elected Chair of the Youth Committee of the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (AFPPD).

He was elected to the post from the 15th General Assembly of the organisation. The election took place during the Assembly held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 27–28 April. The Youth Committee is a regional network comprising lawmakers from 30 national committees across Asia-Pacific and Central Asia.

Following his election as Chair, lawmaker Gauchan said that during his tenure, he would work exemplarily towards policy dialogue and cooperation for the benefit of vulnerable groups such as women, children, young people and the elderly.

"This is an opportunity to raise the voice of youth empowerment from a district beyond the Himalayas to the world, and I will vigorously advocate for inclusive youth policies," he said.

Gauchan emphasised that he would also give high priority to climate change challenges affecting the Himalayan region. Stressing the urgent need for sustainable and inclusive policies to secure the future of the young generation in Nepal, he noted that without providing opportunities to youth, Nepali society would not be able to strengthen its economic, social, cultural, and other sectors.

According to him, during his term, he would focus on building a sustainable future for young people across the Asia-Pacific region while creating opportunities for Nepali youth. Gauchan has been drawing international attention to issues concerning the Himalayan region.
