Rights are secured provided that democracy prevails: NC Acting President Khadka

Kathmandu, April 24: Acting President of the Nepali Congress, Purna Bahadur Khadka, has said citizens' rights are guaranteed only in a democracy.     

Extending his best wishes on the occasion of the Loktantra Diwas or Democracy Day today, he urged each citizen to make commitments to letting democracy not weaken. "Democracy is founded on courage, resolution and sacrifices of brave fighters."     

In the message, he stated that the historic People's Movement-II, founded on the people's struggles before 1950 and aimed to abolish absolute monarchy and restore democracy, had led to the epoch-making transformation on April 24, 2006. As he said, the movement was led by the Nepali Congress and backed by other political parties.     

On the occasion, he acknowledged the dedications, courage and sacrifices of those who had attained martyrdom over the course of various revolutions, struggles and movements launched for national independence and civic rights.     

Stating that Nepal has implemented the constitution in the capacity of the federal democratic republic, and it is the collective responsibility to further strengthen such rights and take the country towards the path of economic prosperity.     

He also stressed that this historic day be celebrated by all with pride. (RSS)
