Kathmandu, Apr. 8: The Fire Safety and Electronic Security International Conference-2025 has officially commenced in Kathmandu with the aim of promoting advanced technologies related to fire risk reduction and electrical safety.

Organised by the Asia Pacific Security Association (APSA) Nepal, the event was inaugurated by the Minister for Forest and Environment, Ain Bahadur Shahi, amidst a special function, on Monday.

Speaking at the conference held in the Capital, Minister Shahi highlighted the nation’s lack of sophisticated equipment and skilled manpower for effective forest fire control and management. He said that, apart from fire engines, the government currently has limited options to combat wildfires.

The minister emphasised the government’s growing seriousness regarding wildfire mitigation, noting that comprehensive strategies are being explored. He stressed the importance of mobilising all available state mechanisms to manage and control forest fires effectively.

Because of the complex topography of Nepal, Minister Shahi underscored the need for collective effort beyond governmental capacity.

“The Government of Nepal has taken the issue of wildfires very seriously. However, reducing their impact is not something the government can achieve alone. It requires a concerted effort from all stakeholders—government bodies, civil society, local communities and the youth. The Ministry of Forests and Environment has treated this as a critical national disaster and is working accordingly,” he remarked.

Likewise, Sunil Kumar Shrestha, President of APSA Nepal, expressed a commitment to collaborate closely with the government on fire safety initiatives in the future. He affirmed that key recommendations and insights arising from the conference will be submitted to relevant government agencies, and efforts will be made to facilitate their implementation through close coordination.

Shrestha emphasised that fire safety should not be regarded merely as a technical concern, but as a vital issue interconnected with public safety, preparedness, and an overarching security framework. He called for coordinated action among the government, private sector and relevant stakeholders. He also pledged APSA Nepal’s active role in raising public awareness, enhancing institutional capacity and contributing to policy-level reforms.

The conference is attended by representatives from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Urban Development, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, Nepali Army, all 753 local governments, industry leaders and fire and electronic safety experts.

Experts from 14 countries—including China, India, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Macau and the Philippines—will present research papers during the conference.

Organisers have announced that various sessions, technology exhibitions and interactive programmes will be held to share international experiences, innovations and best practices with participants.
