Kathmandu, April 1: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's official visit to Thailand beginning tomorrow is expected to further strengthen the friendly relations subsisting between Nepal and Thailand, which have been closely linked by the Buddhist culture and tradition, along with cooperation in the field of tourism, trade and education.

Nepal and Thailand have close relations not only at the government level but also at the people's level.

There are about 80,000 people of Nepali origin currently residing in Thailand and this also reflects the unique relationship between the two countries.

Nepal's relations with Thailand, which are linked by cultural and civilizational values, are based on mutual goodwill and understanding.

Lord Buddha's teachings and values developed from it are a key link connecting the people of Nepal and Thailand. Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, is a holy pilgrimage site for the people of Thailand.

The ties between Nepal and Thailand have become more cordial since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries on November 30, 1959.

The Thai government has also built a Buddhist monastery in Lumbini to strengthen mutual relations by means of religion. The Thai people also have great faith and reverence for King Janak and Janakpur of Nepal.

Nepal's ambassador to Bangkok, Dhan Bahadur Oli, said that the number of Nepalis visiting Thailand for tourism, observation of sea beaches, study and trade has been increasing in recent times.

Trade and commerce between Nepal and Thailand have also helped deepen relations between the two countries. Thai citizens have invested in Nepal's manufacturing and tourism industry. However, Nepal is facing a trade deficit with Thailand.

Nepal exports herbs, handicraft items, chhurpi, Nepali handmade paper, neetle fabric to Thailand while Nepal's imports from Thailand include electrical appliances, motor cars and other vehicles, readymade garments and fruits.

Thai nationals also visit Nepal. More than 25,000 Thai tourists visited Nepal in 2023.(RSS)
