BY A STAFF REPORTER,Kathmandu, Mar. 11: The National Information Commission provided an update on its three-month activities since the appointment of its new Chief Commissioner Dr. Suresh Prasad Acharya and Commissioners Gagan Bista and Durga Bhandari on December 11, 2024.
During a press meet organised by the Commission on Monday, it informed that the commission has engaged in discussions on the right to information, from the local level to the leadership of political parties. Efforts have also been made to maintain ongoing dialogue with information activists. Over this period, the commission held four meetings and made several policy decisions.
“The Commission also conducted separate dialogues with former Chief Commissioners, current Commissioners and individuals continuously active in the field of the right to information. These discussions aim to enhance the effectiveness of the Commission’s activities and gather valuable opinions and suggestions,” said Commissioner and spokesperson Gagan Bista at the press meet.
Additionally, the Right to Information Implementation Monitoring Directive, 2015 has established four units to ensure the nationwide implementation of the right to information.
According to Bista, the Commission has written to the Prime Minister’s Office for coordination with these units—Central Coordination Unit, Implementation Monitoring Unit, and Provincial Monitoring Unit. Additionally, the Ministry of Home Affairs has been directed to regularly send monitoring reports from the District Monitoring Units.
Over the last three months, the commission held 483 hearings in 20 sittings based on appeals received from information activists and individuals who have not received information.
During the press meet, it was also informed that the NIC will hold press meet on last Monday every Nepali month.
