Dharan, Jan. 17: Dhanesh Rai, a resident of Bhojpur, has continued his ancestral occupation at a time when handmade bamboo products are disappearing.
Speaking about his ancestral occupation, Rai said that his father, grandfather, and ancestors have been making and selling various bamboo items in Hatuwagadhi, Bhojpur district. He has continued the tradition by crafting products and selling them.
After moving to the Tarai region from the hilly areas in search of employment, Rai continued his family business in Dharan for about nine years and later transitioned into entrepreneurship.
He said that the income from his bamboo business covers the educational expenses of his children and addresses the needs of his entire family.
"Earlier, my father used to sell bamboo-made items to traders. However, with rising prices in recent times, there has been less profit from selling to traders. So, I decided to start making and selling the items myself," he said.
Rai runs his own shop, called Bhojpur's Nanglo and Household Products, located at Dharan-9, Purna Path.
He makes a variety of bamboo products, including Doko, Fipi, Mandro, Buncha, Bamboo Pinch, Sibring, Chhapani, Nanglo, Pen Holders, and Dalo. While most of the items are crafted from bamboo, some materials are bought from other shops.
According to Rai, these products are largely influenced by the cultural traditions of the Kirant caste.
By continuing the ancestral business, he has created an avenue for economic progress and self-reliance. He emphasized that this business does not require a significant investment, and his family has been able to sustain itself through their hard work.
Rai further noted that his products are taken to fairs, markets, and festivals for sale. He believes it is more profitable to make the items himself rather than buying them from others, as it allows for better control over the pricing and quality of the goods.
