PM Oli mourns demise of former US President Jimmy Carter

Kathmandu, Dec 30: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has mourned the demise of Jimmy Carter, the former President of the United States of America.     

The US 39th President died on Sunday at 100. He was diagnosed with cancer (melanoma) in 2015. He had been receiving hospice care since February 2023.     

"Deeply saddened by the passing of former President and Nobel laureate Jimmy Carter. He leaves a lasting legacy of philanthropy and dedication to human rights and peace. Fondly recalling his 2013 visit to Nepal. May his family and the American people find strength in this loss," the Prime Minister writes on the social site X.     

He was conferred with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 in recognition of his "untiring efforts to explore and achieve peaceful solutions to international conflict, to advance democracy and human rights and to promote economic and social development."     

Carter first visited Nepal as an observer for the 2008 first Constitution Assembly elections.     

As the Carter Center announced, he passed away in Plains, Georgia. According to the announcement, Carter died peacefully, surrounded by his family. No cause of death has been announced at this time.     

Carter's spouse Rosalynn Carter died in 2023 at the age of 96. (RSS)
