TU Senate informal meeting convened at Chancellor's initiation

Kathmandu, Dec 22: An informal meeting of the Tribhuvan University (TU) Senate was held today at the initiative of Prime Minister and TU Chancellor KP Sharma Oli to discuss on various problems seen in the university and its improvement.   

 
The meeting convened at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers in Singha Durbar lasted for about three hours. In the meeting, representatives of the university professors, employees, students, public campuses, among other sectors, presented the sector-wise problems and ways of resolving them.    

Prime Minister Oli on the occasion directed the TU office-bearers to present in the form of proposal the topics on which decisions have to be made along with ways of resolving the problems after holding additional discussions with the sides concerned, incorporating the problems and demands of all sectors.    

Chancellor Oli had determined the time for today for the detailed discussions after getting a sense of the increase in the differing views between the office-bearers and the Senate members on the agenda presented in the Senate meeting convened on December 12.    

The Senate members said that this is the first time that this type of meeting has been convened from the Chancellor level and thanked the Chancellor for providing the opportunity to put their views openly.    

After listening to the suggestions in the meeting from the Senate members, PM Oli urged the TU officials to bring the proposal in the formal meeting after reaching an agreement of sorts following adequate homework.    

Stating that the discussions on the Senate meeting held on December 12 have been presented in a twisted manner in the social media, he said the University Senators should be focused not on public media consumption, but on the main agenda of university's reforms and solving problems.    

Making it clear that he has nothing as personal give and take or benefit from the University, he urged one and all to protect its dignity, prestige and credibility as the TU's development, protection, promotion and progress are the only common concerns.    

"There will be no interference from my side in the TU's appointments. It is the office-bearers who make the decision. Therefore, you people should take the credit for the success and failure. My only concern in my capacity as the Chancellor is that you vary out works for the good of the institution. If this suggestion itself is taken as interference, one can only express surprise at this," he said.    

PM and Chancellor Oli suggested forming a task force for studying and implementing the report of the Committee for Finding Out TU's Movable and Immovable Property. He also suggested for carrying out further study as the report was not adequate.    

He called for rethinking about the TU Service Commission's relevancy if it did not conduct regular examinations.    

Minister for Education, Science and Technology and TU Pro-Chancellor, Bidya Bhattarai, Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Keshar Jung Baral, Secretary at the Ministry of Education Dr Deepak Kafle among other officials participated in the meeting. (RSS)
