By TRN Online, Kathmandu, Dec 16: The Rising Nepal, Nepal's first English broadsheet, marked its 59th Anniversary on Monday.
Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, inaugurated the special ceremony to mark the anniversary.
Addressing the ceremony Minister Gurung said that with the modern times The Rising Nepal should update its content. Minister Gurung added that to be commercial the government media should not forget their role.
"The Rising Nepal and all government media are for the service first then commercial purpose." Minister Gurung said, "So, then, we should think about how to tackle new problems."
Whether government media become commercially success or not their content should be updated to compete with the modern times, the Minister said.
Secretary of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology Radhika Aryal said that The Rising Nepal's content should be focused on people's interests.
"The Rising Nepal has been contributing to exposing Nepal's scenario to the international arena, so the ministry is committed to transforming it with the modern time by formulating or amending acts and policies." Secretary Aryal added.
Addressing the ceremony the Executive Chairman of the Gorkhapatra Corporation Bishnu Prasad Subedi said that there is a significant role of The Rising Nepal in spreading knowledge of English literature and also English language in Nepal.
"The Rising Nepal is a reputed school of English journalism in Nepal. Retaining its legacy we have moved with the modern time with digital platforms and new layout designing." Executive Chairman Subedi added.
Gorkhapatra Corporation's General Manager Lal Bahadur Airi mentioned that not only in its beginning time, in these days also The Rising Nepal is a strong medium to globalize Nepal's issues.
Similarly, the Acting Editor In Chief of The Rising Nepal Bhimsen Thapaliya said that disseminating reliable and authentic information is The Rising Nepal's identity. He added that TRN disseminated the government's views and people's voices. Editor Thapaliya made a presentation about the status of the paper and the performance of TRN.
Speaking at the ceremony former Editor in Chief of The Rising Nepal and Professor P Kharel said that, likewise the Public Service Broadcast (PSB), the concept of Public Service Journalism should be brought to strengthen The Rising Nepal and Gorkhapatra.
On the occasion, former Editor in Chiefs of The Rising Nepal Shyam Bahadur KC, P Kharel and Adityaman Shrestha were honoured for their contribution. Similarly, journalists of The Rising Nepal Laxman Kafle, Ajita Rijal and Cholakant Khanal were felicitated.
