Kathmandu, Dec 12: Prime Minister and Chancellor of Tribhuvan University (TU), KP Sharma Oli, has directed the Vice Chancellor, Deans and Campus Chief to run colleges based on meritocracy.
During the Senate of the oldest university of the country, TU, PM Oli, viewed the Deans and Chief of Campuses need to be appointed in a way that helps smooth running and favours meritocracy. The Vice-Chancellor is the person to take the lead in running the university, he reminded, adding that fair administration is imperative.
A Senate member had raised a question as to why the appointments of the persons recommended as Dean and Campus Chiefs were not materialized. To which, PM Oli, directed for an appointment on December 22.
"TU must be run in a fair and rule-based manner. TU's autonomy is not individual freedom, the rights devolved via Senate," Oli said, arguing, "There must not be drama in the name of meritocracy."
The Chancellor argued there was a media stunt that he interfered with the university. "For the right cause, I should play my role. I don't interfere, but believe in meritocracy," Chancellor Oli reiterated.
According to him, the Senate warrants creative and mature discussion rather than a place for criticism. He also urged the office bearers to conduct the Senate with a proper agenda so that it ensures positive results.
Those who attended the Senate complained that the office bearers failed to do adequate homework to set the agenda.
PM Oli vowed a rule-based address to the genuine demands made to resolve problems facing the university. (RSS)
