By Our Correspondent,Dhadeldhura, Sept. 17: The Budi Polne festival is a religious event celebrated yearly with great fanfare in various districts of Sudurpashchim Province, including Dhadeldhura, during Asoj Sankranti.
This festival commemorates the day when Lord Krishna killed the demon, Putana.
To honour this victory of righteousness over evil, Putana’s effigy is burned on Asoj Sankranti, which falls on Tuesday this year.
After the ‘Budi’, representing the demon Putana, is burned, the villagers celebrate with the Deuda dance and various games in the villages of Sudurpashchim Province.
Locals erect a pine tree pole and gather tree branches at a designated place to burn the effigy of ‘Budi.’
According to mythology, during the Dwapar Yuga, Putana, under the command of the demon Kansha, tried to kill Lord Krishna by poisoning his milk.
However, Lord Krishna, aware of her intentions, killed her by sucking her blood.
To commemorate this victory over evil, the ‘Budi Polne’ festival continues to be celebrated in Sudurpashchim Province to this day.
