Khajura Poultry Farm sells 172,000 chicks

By Our Correspondent,Nepalgunj, Sept. 15: The Poultry Development Farm in Khajura, Banke, has reported significant sales over the past year, with transactions exceeding 172,000 units of chicks, chickens, and eggs.

According to Suman Khanal, head of the farm, during the last financial year (2080-81), the farm achieved sales totalling Rs. 10 million. The breakdown of this amount includes Rs 7.6 million from egg sales, Rs 2.4 million from chickens, and Rs. 619,617 from chicks.

Khanal highlighted that the farm produced and sold 32,000 more chicks than initially targeted, surpassing its annual target by over 21 per cent. The farm had aimed to produce 150,000 chicks but ended up producing 182,000.

In the last fiscal year, the farm maintained 10,000 chicks on-site and sold 172,000. So far, in the current financial year, the farm has already sold chicks worth Rs. 600,000 within just a month and a half.

Khanal noted that the farm is currently in a transition, which involves emptying the hatchery. Production and sales of new chicks are expected to ramp up again starting in the last week of October.

Established in 1977, the Khajura Poultry Development Farm has been dedicated to the production and sale of local chicken breeds, including Sakini, Gwar Khuile, Pwankh Ulte, Khajura Sakinicross, New Hampshire, Block Australorp, and Kadaknath. The farm is committed to preserving and promoting local chicken breeds, among farmers.

Currently, the farm sells one-day-old chicks for NPR 45 each, and overgrown roosters for Rs. 300 per kg. Additionally, eggs that do not hatch are sold at Rs. 9 per egg, according to the farm's office.
