Parsa, Sept 2: Import of motorcycles via Birgunj, the major transit point in the country, has doubled in the first month of the current fiscal year compared to the corresponding period last fiscal year. The rise is cent percent.

However, the imports of jeeps and cars have decreased by 40 percent.

Birgunj Customs Office's information officer Raghu Lal Karna said a total of 3,571 motorcycles worth Rs 467.7 million were imported in the month of Saun (July-August) during the fiscal year, 2080-81 BS (2023-24) while the figure jumped to 7,150 worth Rs 944.8 million in the first month of the current fiscal year, 2081-82 BS.

As the Office says a total of 127 jeeps and cars amounting to Rs 206 million were imported in July-August of the fiscal year, 2080-81 BS and the number reduced by 76 in the corresponding month of this fiscal year. The worth of the vehicles was Rs 144.4 million.

As Karna informed, now, the government guarantees 50 percent discounts on imports of petrol-run motorcycles (as parts) meant for assembling them in the country from India and third countries which is the reason for the rising imports of motorcycles.

The revenue collected from the imports was Rs 442.1 million in the first month of the last fiscal year and it rose to Rs 884.4 million in the corresponding month this year. (RSS)
