Godavari (Kailali), Aug 6 : Commercial rearing of advanced breeds of cows and buffaloes has made Kailali district self-sufficient in milk production. The district has started to export milk to other districts, says Kabiraj Kathayat, Information Officer of the Veterinary Hospital and Animal Services Expert Center.
According to the statistics of the
Center based in Dhangadhi, after the provincial government introduced a subsidy
program for those taking up dairy as a business, 96 metric tons of milk was produced
in Kailali in the fiscal year 2078/79 and 106 metric tons of milk in the fiscal
year 2079/80. In the year 2080/81, 168 metric tons of milk was produced by the
district.
Furthermore, the Dairy Development
Project Attaria says that 2,000 to 2,500 liters of milk is exported from the
district every day.
In the district, 52 farms of cows
and buffaloes have been registered officially at the Livestock Services Office.
Pushpa Bharati of the Office said that 156 people have got direct employment in
the farms.
A total of 14 dairy cooperatives,
44 private dairies and one Khaptad Industries Pvt. Ltd are operating in
different places of the district with an estimated annual business of around Rs
188.4 million.
Officer at Livestock and Fisheries
Development Directorate, Puskarraj Nath, said Sudurpaschim Province is becoming
self-sufficient in meat, eggs and milk production. The directorate claims that
Kailali and Kanchanpur are nearing self-sufficiency not only in milk, eggs and
meat but also in fish production. (RSS)
