Monsoon to become more active this week

By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, July 2:The Meteorological Forecasting Division (MFD) has said that the monsoon has become active in recent days because of the influence of the monsoon trough.

The Division under the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology issued a special monsoon weather bulletin on Sunday alerting people to be vigilant as the monsoon is likely to become more active for the next few days.

According to Sanjeev Adhikary, a meteorologist at the MFD, the monsoon is expected to remain active in Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini Provinces until Thursday. The DHM has issued high alerts in most districts of these provinces, except for a few in Bagmati Province.

Adhikary mentioned, “Light to moderate rainfall is expected in many areas, with a possibility of heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning in some places within these provinces. There’s also a chance of very heavy rain in isolated areas of Koshi, Gandaki and Lumbini Provinces.”

In the past 24 hours, Udayapur recorded the highest rainfall at 169 mm by 6 pm on Monday, followed by Kaski with 143.4 mm, Bardiya with 111 mm, Banke with 92.4 mm, Bara with 117.8 mm and Sindhuli with 139.4 mm. Adhikary noted that rainfall exceeding 100 mm within 24 hours is considered heavy.

Meanwhile, five families at Jese Gauridanda in Melung Rural Municipality-7 in Okhaldhunga were displaced by a landslide on Monday.

According to our Okhaldhunga correspondent, 23 other houses of the same place were at risk of landslides triggered by heavy rainfall.
