The publication of Gorkhapatra in 1958 BS was not only the beginning of journalism, it was also a milestone in the development of mass communication. The unceasing journey of Gorkhapatra for 124 years informing and educating the people was an unprecedented pride in itself. As an institution that has seen the ups and downs of history, it stands as a notable representative of the entire era. Gorkhapatra has been an active witness of all kinds of political and social transformation and the viscidities in the country.

Gorkhapatra is the largest publication house in the country in terms of human resource, diversity of equipment, access, and technology. Along with Gorkhapatra, we have been publishing the English broadsheet daily The Rising Nepal, esteemed literary magazine Madhuparka, heartbeat of youth Yuvamanch, and Muna, a popular publication for children. The advancement of digital Gorkhapatra which has a bearing on the future of the institution is also our priority.

This media institution has played a vital role not only in the dissemination of information and opinion, but also in the protection of history and promotion of cultural diversity. The work of Gorkhapatra towards consolidation of national unity and ethnic harmony through the inclusive publication of Naya Nepal in 43 national languages has drawn appreciation from all sectors of the society.

Collaborations have been forged with stakeholder institutions like National Archives, Press Council and Tribhuvan University Central Library for digitally archiving and protecting the materials including the photos published in all the issues of Gorkhapatra, The Rising Nepal and other publications of the corporation.

Born in a specific context, this corporation used to operate in a traditional way. As we are rich in terms of legacy and history, there is a pressing obligation to make this publication house beautiful and strong. We have to transform our attitude and working style in order to carve our effective standing in the competitive environment marked by digital technology. It is the call of the time to develop this corporation into a digitally sound smart media institution by improving the internal structural system and increasing the quality of its products. Efforts are continuing to make the corporation self-sufficient by adopting the new strategy of market promotion taking into account the challenges faced by the print media in a digitally dominated environment and shrinking advertisement flow.

The landscape and characteristics of the media industry has seen a shift due to the accelerating development of technology. The expansion of the digital media has put the existence of the traditional media at risk. The print media is especially vulnerable in this scenario. The mainstream journalism, more prominently the print media, has faced existential crisis due to rising influence and wide outreach of the social media. Therefore there is the need of drastic improvement in the quality of the content we are catering to the audience.

The traditional definition and the dimension of media have changed. Innumerable forms of media that provide instant updates of news are available to the audience now. The readers have no patience to wait long for getting information and expressing their opinions. So, why should they wait for 24 hours to read Gorkhapatra and The Rising Nepal? This is pressing question and challenge before us. Considering this reality, we need to significantly upgrade the design and quality standard of our products. Our endeavours are focused toward that direction. We are striving to maintain professional quality while remaining aware about our responsibility towards the state and the citizens.

It is the matter of additional pride and delight that the government has announced 24th Baishakh as the National Journalism Day on the basis of the launch of Gorkhapatra. We express special gratitude to President Ramchandra Paudel, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and Minister for Communication and Information Technology Rekha Sharma for warmly encouraging us by extending best wishes on this day. We also express deep respect to the contribution of all members of the Gorkhapatra family who are currently working and the former members who had invested their skills and creations in the course of time. We express heart-felt thanks to our respected readers, supporters and well-wishers for continuously pouring love and encouraging us in the 124-year long journey of the Gorkhapatra.
