By Our Correspondent,Damak, Apr. 14: Pythons, measuring up to 6.6 kg and weighing 600 grams, have been found in Mechinagar, Jhapa, along the roadside designated for the construction of the Asian highway, raising alarms about the impact of deforestation on the local wildlife.

The widespread deforestation for road construction has disrupted the habitats of birds and animals in the area, leading to adverse effects on their well-being.

Debendra Kharel, a researcher specialising in avian and animal studies, reported the discovery of 73 pythons in distress due to the loss of their natural habitats.

Kharel emphasised the significant loss of biodiversity and wildlife resulting from the disappearance of vegetation important for the survival of these pythons. The urgency of the situation became evident recently when a python was found in Satighatta, prompting immediate rescue efforts by Kharel and his team.

In response to the crisis, Kharel and his team have been actively involved in rescuing and releasing pythons back into suitable habitats. However, the increasing frequency of such incidents underscores the escalating threat posed by deforestation to the region's wildlife population.

Efforts to mitigate the impact of deforestation on wildlife are carried out by Kharel and his team advocating for greater conservation measures and sustainable development practices in Mechinagar municipality and beyond.
