Lumbini, Jan 5: President Ramchandra Paudel is arriving in Butwal city this afternoon to witness the handover of the historic Jitgadhi Killa (Fort) to the Butwal Sub-Metropolitan City. President Paudel is also scheduled to inaugurate the Muktinathdham building.
It is said that Chief of Army Staff
Prabhuram Sharma would hand over the Jitgadhi Killa to Mayor of Butwal
Sub-Metropolitan City Khelraj Pandey at the presence of President Paudel.
Mayor Pandey said that entire
preparations of the programmes are over.
After the handover, the Jitgadhi
Killa would come under the scope of Butwal Sub-Metropolitan City. The Nepal
Army carried out the reconstruction of the Jitgadhi Killa located on the back
of Tinau river at Butwal Sub-Metropolitan City-1.
Mayor Pandey shared now the Butwal
Sub-Metropolitan City would advance the tourism promotional activities in a
planned fashion in historic Jitgadhi Killa. "We will protect the fort and
will develop it as a tourist destination and a site for the study of
Nepal-British war," Mayor Pandey added.
The Nepali forces had beaten
Britain's East Indian Company's army in the Jitgadhi Killa under the command of
Colonel Ujir Singh. Singh was the military commander at the Palpa-Butwal axis
during the Anglo-Nepalese War of 1814-1816 and had led his force to
victory.
The Fort, which acquired the name
Jeetgadhi after the Nepali troops triumphing against the British in 1816 AD, is
located at the western bank of the Tinau River in Butwal. (RSS)
