By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Dec. 26:The theatrical journey of the drama ‘Gulaf’ (The Rose) is set to commence in Nepal, with its world premiere scheduled for December 27, next year at Mandala Theatre, Thapa Gaon, Kathmandu.

The play is also set to tour various European cities.

Conceived and directed by Ram Hari Dhakal, a seasoned theatre practitioner with over two decades of experience in the theatre, ‘Gulaf’ falls under the genre of ‘physical theatre’, where the narrative unfolds without traditional dialogue, relying on scenes to convey the story.

Titled ‘The Rose: An Awakening Journey of Yashodhara’ in English, this unique play explores the emotional turmoil of Yashodhara, the wife of Prince Siddharth Gautam, who embarks on a quest for answers, leaving behind his newborn son Rahul. What sets ‘Gulaf’ apart is not just its unconventional genre but also the interactive stage design.

The stage is positioned in the centre of the theatre, allowing the audience to observe the performance from all angles. Each show accommodates only 64 spectators.

The central theme of the play revolves around Yashodhara’s emotional journey from the anguish and separation caused by Siddharth Gautam’s departure to her eventual awakening.

The play delves into Yashodhara’s internal struggles and transformations, expressed through physical performances.

The lead roles of Yashodhara are portrayed by Deeya Maskey and Sarita Sah.

The production boasts a talented team, including sound designer Dev Neupan, lighting designer Umesh Tamang, costume designer Sanjita Parajuli, stage constructor Hum BC, cover artist Anamika Gautam, and stage manager Kedar Shrestha. Assistant roles are handled by Bal Bahadur Rai, Kapaseli Thito, Tirtha Vishwakarma, Sasmil Poon Magar and Eeksa Maden Limbu.

The world premiere of ‘Gulaf’ is scheduled for 4 pm on December 27 , with daily performances (excluding Mondays) continuing until January 7. Saturday shows will be staged at 1 pm.

This production, presented by Thetna Arts and Mandala Theatre, receives support from Art and Culture Norway, Nordisk Culture Fund, and FfukNo.

In Nepal, Gurukul, Actors’ Studio, and Theatre Mall are contributing to the success of the performances.

Director Dhakal earlier presented three consecutive sensory plays (Sensory Theater) in Nepal. Only in July this year, he staged the sensory play ‘Chakra’ (The Wheel) at Mandala Theater.
