Geminids meteor showers tonight

By TRN Online, Kathmandu, Dec 14: A pleasant sight of the Geminids meteor shower can be observed clearly in the sky on Thursday night.

Dr Sanat Kumar Sharma, Executive Director of the B.P Koirala Memorial Planetarium, Observatory and Science Museum, said that tonight Geminids can observed from any place if the sky is clear.

According to him, it can be observed from any place with bare eyes. This has been named, ‘Geminids’, by astrologists. The meteor looks like it has come from the horoscope of Gemini, therefore, it has been named Geminids.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) called the Geminids the ‘best’ meteor shower of this year.

Dr Sharma said, “Geminids can be observed from the bare eye after today’s midnight to 3-4 AM of Friday by turning oneself in the east direction. There will be numerous meteor showers of Geminids this year therefore it has been considered remarkable.”

Geminids can be observed in the sky from December 4 to December 17, but, it will reach its peak today.

Meteor showers light up the sky when small remnants from asteroids or comets enter Earth’s atmosphere at high speeds. When those bits of cosmic dust burn up and disintegrate, they result in magnificent trails of light.

Locally, they are called ‘fallen stars.’ This does not touch the surface of earth therefore it does not cause any harm.
