By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Oct. 28: The Bada Dashain formally concludes today with the Kojagrat Purnima today.
The Purnima (full moon), which has fallen on Saturday this year, is observed by Hindus nationwide as the final day of the 15-day Dashain festival. The day is marked by worshipping and paying homage to Mahalaxmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity.
On this day, devotees stay awake the whole night and light lamps. This is believed to make the house lively and inviting for goddess Mahalaxmi. In fact, the word ‘Kojagrat’ refers to the act of staying awake.
The houses where Mahalxmi visits get bestowed with wealth and prosperity. The giving and receiving of Tika and Jamara also finishes on this day.
In Kathmandu Valley, people gather at the Swoyambhu Mahachaitya and light Mahadeep lamps.
Meanwhile, the holy bathing for the Nepali month of Kartik (Kartik Snan) also starts from Kojagrat Purnima. It is tradition to wrap a long bamboo pole with paper or cloth and light a lamp at the top.
