Mugu linked with national transmission grid

By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Sept. 12: Mugu district of Karnali Province is now connected to the national electricity transmission system.

The Nepal Electricity Authority has supplied electricity to Gamgadhi, the district headquarters of Mugu, by tapping the 33 kV transmission line from Kalikot to Jumla at a place called Nagma.

The NEA constructed a transmission line of about 85 km and supplied electricity to Gamgadhi, the headquarters of Mugu.

The Authority has started supplying electricity from the national grid to Gamgadhi and other areas from Sunday.

The NEA had been supplying electricity generated from the 400 KW installed capacity Gamgad Small Hydropower Project.

With the connection of the national transmission line in Mugu, electricity from the national grid has reached 76 districts out of 77 districts.

Now only Humla district of Karnali Province remains to be connected to the national transmission line.

In Humla, the contract agreement has been completed and the survey is being carried out to connect it to the national transmission line.

Managing Director of NEA Kul Man Ghising said that the problem of power supply in Mugu due to the shutdown of small hydroelectric plants frequently will be solved after the reach of the national transmission line.

He said that since the national transmission line has reached, the electrification will be accelerated across the district.

Currently, there are 3,500 household customers of the Authority in Mugu.

Due to the heavy rains in October last year, the Gamgad Small Hydropower Plant was damaged and the electricity production had stopped.

The NEA immediately installed a diesel generator and provided electricity to the customers. The flood and landslide that came with heavy rain had damaged nearly 700 metres of the 1,100 metres long canal of the power plant located in Chhayanath Rara Municipality-4. Similarly, the substation structures of the power house were also damaged by the flood.

Reconstruction and repair of canals damaged by floods led to the operation of the hydroelectric power plant.

Shambhu Kusiyat Yadav, head of the Karnali Province Office, NEA, said that the 33/11 kV substation and the 11 kV transmission line are being upgraded to 33 kV in Gamgadhi to make the power supply of Mugu reliable and qualitative.
